I’ve been grinding non-stop during the Spring Festival, and in this 10,000-word longread, I will fully decode the contents of the giants, the Hall of Thunder, and the giant mural, One Piece. Thanks to a single mural and three lines of prophecy, the face of One Piece’s ending is finally becoming clear. I have to admit, I still underestimated Imu—her true goal is to become a god.

Before we let Oda’s twists mislead us, we first need to understand the mythological system within One Piece. Beyond the Sun God Nika, the divine scriptures also mention gods of the earth, forest, and sea. These names appeared in the Skypiea arc during the Shandia tribe’s rituals, and the snake god worshiped there directly mirrors the sea serpent shown in the mural. Characters like Nami, who has always had a deep connection to weather and navigation, and Boa Hancock, who herself wields the power of a myth-inspired Devil Fruit, show how Oda threads this mythology through individual stories.

Oda drew from real-world myths but prefers to pay homage to his own ideas, aiming to create a unique “mythos” belonging solely to One Piece—a tale of god-like battles.

1. The Mythological System of the Pirate World

The divine scriptures mention many gods. Besides the Sun God Nika, there are also gods of earth, forest, and the sea. These gods likely represent natural phenomena, forces, or even allegories for people themselves. The continents and seas in the One Piece world are like two opposing forces, taking turns dominating humanity’s fate. The struggle between Im and Joy Boy can be seen as a clash of land power versus sea power.

2. The Three Divine Scriptures and the Three Worlds

First World: The Moon People of Ancient Times and the Serpent of Hellfire

Scripture text:

“On the earth of the world, there is flame. Humanity lost to desire and touched the forbidden sun. The slaves prayed, and so the Sun God appeared. The God of Strength grew furious, and along with the serpent of hellfire, consumed the world with death and darkness. Since then, they could never meet again.”

This is the oldest era, corresponding to the ancient times. Slaves’ prayers gave birth to the Sun God Nika, symbolizing freedom.

The moon people, facing energy depletion, traveled to the Blue Planet with their advanced technology and developed an energy source similar to an artificial sun.

The “flame” refers to the energy the moon people needed; “humanity lost to desire and touched the forbidden sun” hints at Vegapunk’s Mother Flame and the allegory of Icarus’ wings.

The war for limitless energy triggered massive earthquakes, driving ancient creatures like dinosaur-like species extinct. Continental drift formed the Red Line—i.e., the “serpent of hellfire.”

Thus, the First World was destroyed, and the land emerged as the victor.

Summary:
Moon people ruled the world; slaves longed for freedom, leading to the Sun God Nika’s appearance. The energy war destroyed the world and gave birth to the Red Line.

Second World: The Tsunami of the Void Century and the Wrath of the Sea God

Scripture text:

“In the void, there is breath. The Forest God sent the Demon Sun God to spread war. The children of the half moon dreamed. The children of the moon dreamed. Humanity killed the sun and ascended to godhood. The Sea God grew furious and rampaged. Since then, they could never meet again.” One Piece

After the First World was destroyed, the world reset to an initial state (“in the void, there is breath”).

The Forest God symbolizes the continuation of the earth, sending out Devil Fruits—supernatural powers that reshaped the world. But Devil Fruit users lose power upon contact with seawater, showing they contradict the sea.

The children of the half moon refer to the D. clan, with the half moon symbolizing incompleteness and change. The children of the moon point to Im’s faction. Both sides dream of different futures: freedom versus order.

“Killing the sun” implies destroying the limitless energy bringing dawn, not literally killing the Sun God Nika; the sun’s defeat brought a reign of darkness.

Nine hundred years ago, Joy Boy led the D. clan to bring the dawn but failed against Im and the 19-king alliance.

Ancient weapons triggered tsunamis, raising sea levels by 200 meters and drowning much of the land, giving rise to the World Government.

Summary:
Human civilization revived; Devil Fruits emerged; conflict between freedom and order intensified. Joy Boy was defeated; tsunamis destroyed the land; the sea emerged as the Second World’s victor.

Third World: Luffy and the Arrival of the Promised Day

Scripture text:

“In the chaos, there is the blank, turbulent remnant, reminding people of the promised day. Listen to the voice of the shattered moon. The Sun God dances with laughter, guiding the world to its end. The sun returns; a new dawn arrives. They will finally meet again.”

The “blank, turbulent remnant in the chaos” points to the Void Century’s erased history after which the World Government covered everything up.

The “remnant” symbolizes key world-changing moments like Luffy’s Gear 5 awakening.

The promise to Fish-Man Island, the creation of Momonosuke’s Wano, and the dream of Fish-Men migrating to the surface all point to this promised day.

The shattered moon suggests Im’s power being broken. The Sun God dancing and laughing symbolizes Luffy inheriting Nika’s will, pushing the world towards the end of the old era—not the end of the world itself.

The sun’s return foretells a world of freedom and light; the dark order is on the brink of collapse.

Summary:
The story of the Third World is still unfolding. Luffy and his friends are driving the world toward freedom, aiming for the promised day and a new dawn.

3. The Victories and Destinies of the Three Worlds

  • First World victor: the land.
  • Second World victor: the sea.
  • Third World: the outcome is undecided, but hints at the sun’s freedom returning once again.

Each world’s ending concludes with the phrase: “Since then, they could never meet again.” The “they” here likely refers to the sun and moon—symbols of the eternal opposition between free will and oppressive darkness. The victory of one leads to the loss of the other. In this cycle of fate, the sun’s will is constantly inherited, and the flame of resistance against oppression and pursuit of freedom never dies.

Nami’s own journey—from a child enslaved by Arlong’s pirates to the Straw Hats’ navigator seeking freedom—embodies this cycle of liberation. Meanwhile, One Piece Boa Hancock, once a slave herself and now the powerful Empress of Amazon Lily, shows how the will to break chains continues across generations.

4. Oda’s Ambition: Creating a Pirate Mythology

Oda uses the stories of the three worlds to tie together every clue: the moon ruins, Sun God Nika, the D. clan, the ancient weapons—building a complete pirate mythology centered on one core theme:

Humanity’s eternal struggle for resources and freedom.

The Sun God Nika stands for freedom; whenever the world falls into darkness, someone inherits Nika’s will to rebel against fate and bring new hope.

That’s the complete analysis for this post. Thanks for reading! Feel free to leave your thoughts on the three worlds and the divine scriptures below—let’s talk about it more. See you in the next post!
