Collector Care 107: Long-Term Storage and Preservation Tips
If you rotate your display or have pieces you keep stored for safekeeping, proper long-term storage is just as important as display care. Here are some helpful tips to keep your collection protected while off the shelf.
-
Choose the right storage box.
Use sturdy plastic containers or acid-free boxes. Avoid cheap cardboard that absorbs moisture. -
Wrap safely.
Use soft microfiber cloths, bubble wrap, or foam sheets. Avoid newspaper or colored paper that may transfer ink. -
Keep it dry.
Add silica gel packs to every storage container. These help manage moisture and prevent mold or material warping. -
Avoid extreme temperatures.
Store in a cool, stable room. Avoid attics, basements, or areas with direct heat, which can deform or discolor materials. -
Store outfits separately. Fabric clothing or accessories should be wrapped individually. This prevents color transfer and keeps fabric from wrinkling or sticking.
-
Label your boxes.
Write the character name or category on the outside so you can find items without opening everything. -
Check periodically.
Every few months, open your storage boxes to inspect for moisture, mild odors, or deformation, and replace silica packs if needed. -
Handle with gloves.
If you’re storing high-end pieces, cottongloves help prevent oils from your hands from sticking to surfaces.
Proper storage keeps your collection safe even when it’s not on display. 📦✨
